It’s the humpback whales that bring me back to Maui each. The whales make an annual pilgrimage from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm Hawaiian waters. Humpback whales are the favorites of whale lovers because of their acrobatic surface activity.
This image was made at the end of an exciting day whale watching within the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. We were following a group of whales trying to line up a shot against the setting sun with the Island of Lanai on the horizon. Our patience was rewarded as the lead whale slowly lifted its fluke out of the water to make a deep dive.
What captivates me about whales is that so much is hidden from us below the water, out of view. So much about their lives still remain a mystery.
